Preserving Legacy, Inspiring THE Future

Welcome to the Carter G. Woodson Society

Join us in celebrating the rich heritage and ongoing contributions of Black American students and alumni to the history and culture of Collegiate School of New York City.

Our Mission

Empowering Through Black Intellectualism and Education

The Carter G. Woodson Society at Collegiate School supports the intellectual, social and cultural experience of Black Dutchmen.

The Society supports the Black Dutchmen community by creating spaces for dialogue and discussion, organizing visits to cultural sites and institutions, spearheading mentoring across divisions, and other activities.

The Society engages with the broader Collegiate community by organizing Black History month programming and other school assemblies. We also host conferences and facilitate conversations around Black intellectual affairs. In addition, we participate in academic conferences, symposia, and other presentations.

Explore the impactful initiatives we offer to foster education and community engagement.

Annual Conference

At our annual conferences, members of the Carter G. Woodson Society select a theme that highlights a topic in Black academia or a current event impacting Black America. Scholars, practitioners, business and civic leaders, as well as student leaders serve as panelists and keynote speakers.

Buddy Program

The Carter G. Woodson Buddy Program is designed to connect Black high school students at Collegiate with Black middle and elementary school students.

Academic Journal

Each year the Carter G. Woodson Society Student Journal selects a theme about which students and alumni submit scholarly articles and other academic writings.

Community Service

The Carter G. Woodson Society firmly believes in the importance of giving back. As such, each year we select a program to partner with during our “Day of Service”.

Conferences and Panels

We are often invited to present at outside conferences, symposia, and other public events.
